John Donald Fontenot, 91, of Vidor, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on February 19, 1934, in Ville Platte, Louisiana, to Celestine and Isaure Fontenot, John lived a life filled with adventure, hard work, and deep devotion to those he loved. In his early years, he found his calling on the water, working on tugboats and eventually becoming a captain—a role he took great pride in. He later retired from National Linen Service and also worked for Brown and Root, earning a reputation as a dedicated and dependable worker.
John had a true passion for the water. His heart was most at peace while shrimping, fishing, or simply enjoying the salt air. He made his home for a time in Port Bolivar, where he had his own fishing pier and spent countless hours catching flounder and crabs. Also loved playing golf. These simple pleasures brought him great joy.
Seventy years ago, on his birthday, he married the love of his life, Betty Perkins. Together, they built a beautiful legacy grounded in faith, love, and family. John was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, and his beloved grandchildren Jeremy Fontenot and Kloe Fontenot.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years, Betty Fontenot; his children Peggy Peveto and husband Bruce, Donell Fontenot, and John Martin Fontenot and wife Debbie. He also leaves behind a loving group of grandchildren: John Edward Garcia, Kelly Jones, B.J. Peveto, Josh Fontenot, Niki Fontenot, Cody Fontenot, and Brittany George; 15 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren, with one more expected soon.
John will be remembered for his gentle strength, love for the water, and the deep care he had for his family. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.
