VISD names December Employees of the Month

Principals Caro-lyn Wedgeworth and Jeff Leger, who shared a campus for a while until Oak Forest went into portable buildings, banned together to nominate their PE teachers and paraprofessionals for Employee of the Month for Vidor ISD. Janet Manley and her aide Lori Lawhon at Oak Forest won the award, sharing it with Carol Winfree and her aide Leslie Santana. Manley was moved to Vidor Elementary and Lawhon to Pine Forest when Oak Forest flooded, and both worked to make the situations work.

Stockings Filled

Our little town was devastated by Harvey, but people from across the nation care! Vidor Junior High had sixty boxes of filled Christmas stockings hand delivered by six wonderful women who packed their mini vans full . They came from several different states. Some of the funds were raised by youth who hosted a bake sale in New York City at a subway entrance and raised over a thousand dollars for goodies to be placed in the stockings to that Vidor Junior High students could have a merry Christmas .

Visiting Rotarian

Colleen Wilder of the Rotary Club of Valparaiso, Indiana, was a guest at Vidor Rotary Club on Monday. Wilder was volunteering in the area and chose the Vidor Rotary Club to visit. She and Vidor Rotary Club president Sally Andrews exchanged club flags.

Generous Donation

Oak Forest Elementary received $2000 in gift cards from Academy through a promotion run by Kool 92.5 and iHeart Media. They were nominated and the number of nominations from a generous public netted them the cards.

They will replace gym and PE equipment which was lost in the floods with Hurricane Harvey. Pictured left to right are Oak Forest principal Carolyn Wedgeworth, PE paraprofessional Lori Lawhon, Kevin Born and Patrick Sanders from iHeart Media, and PE teacher Janet Manley.

Smith takes 1st Chair

Jose Ochoa, Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School Director of Bands, announced that one of his students has earned a spot in the Texas All-State Jazz Ensemble. Kace Smith not only made the state jazz band, he also placed First in the entire state.

Over 64,000 students enter the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Audition process each year. “What makes the accomplishment even more remarkable, said Ochoa, “is that this contest includes students from 5A and 6A schools.

Stark Foundation books receive national awards

ORANGE – December 2017 – The Nelda C and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation proudly announces that two publications, Branding the American West: Paintings and Films, 1900- 1950, edited by Sarah E. Boehme and Marian Wardle and The Long Shadow: The Lutcher- Stark Lumber Dynasty written by Ellen Rienstra and Joan Stiles, have received national awards this year.

Branding the American West: Paintings and Films, 1900-1950, co-edited by the Stark Museum of Art’s curator, Dr. Sarah Boehme, and printed by the University of Oklahoma Press has received three awards this year. This publication was a companion to the Branding the American West: Paintings and Films, 1900 – 1950 traveling exhibition that featured collections from both the Stark Museum of Art and Brigham Young Museum of Art. Between 2016 and 2017 exhibition was hosted at the Brigham Young Museum of Art in Provo, UT, the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, VA, and the Stark Museum of Art.
