Texas conducts hurricane drill

On Monday, the Texas Department of Public Safety’s (TXDPS) Texas Division of Emergency Management hosted representatives from approximately 30 agencies at the Texas State Operations Center in Austin for a large-scale hurricane exercise, dubbed Hurricane Charlie.

 

The Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM), along with the state agencies and partner organizations with the Texas Emergency Management Council, are conducting the week-long hurricane exercise with various local officials and federal partners to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season, which began June 1 and continues through November 30. TXDPS is also reminding Texans to make plans now to protect themselves and their families before a storm develops.

Senior Walk

Vidor High School seniors wore their caps and gowns to parade the hallways of the three elementary campuses on Tuesday, May 23. “Pomp and Circumstance” was played as the students walked, perhaps encouraging those younger than them to dream of the day when they, also, will graduate from Vidor High School.

Barbara Gene McMahan

Barbara Gene McMahan, 73, of Vidor died Tuesday, May 30th, 2017 at Harbor Hospice House in Beaumont. A native of Texas City, TX, she was a longtime resident of Vidor. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor. Barbara is survived by her daughters Tina Suarez of Groves, TX, Chris Hightower of Groves, TX, Sara Trahan of Lake Charles, LA and Crystal Downey of Kountze, TX, son Daniel Johnson of Lake Charles, LA, 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Billy Ross Ricks Sr.

Billy Ross Ricks Sr., 84, of Vidor died Wednesday, May 31st, 2017 at his residence. A native of Grand Cane, Louisiana, he was a longtime resident of Vidor. Billy served his country in the US Army for 20 years and served in the Korean War and the Vietnam conflict. He was a truck driver for 13 + years after he had retired from the military. Visitation began at 6:00 pm Sunday, June 4, 2017 at Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor. Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm Monday, June 5, 2017 at Memorial Funeral Home with burial following at Restlawn Memorial Park in Vidor. Billy was preceded in death by his wife Shizuko “Sue” Ricks, daughter Shirley Ricks, brothers Bobby, Jackie and Walker Ricks, sisters Mozelle Weghorst and Carnelle Head. He is survived by his sons Billy Ricks Jr.

Delores Ann Smith

Delores Ann Smith, 83 of Vidor, passed away Friday June 2, 2017. She was born March 27, 1934 in Nederland, Texas to the late Mr. Joseph Ovey Guidry and Mrs. Marie Ada East Guidry. She made her home in Vidor with her husband and family, working as a self-employed caregiver during her life. She was a feisty woman who loved the Houston Astros and Dallas Cowboys. Delores loved to fish and work in her garden. Spending time with her grandchildren made her very happy. Her excellent cooking skills are a treasured memory for all her loved ones. She is preceded in death by her husband, James R Smith; sons, Gary Smith, Michael Smith, Randy Smith and Clint Smith; brothers, J.C Guidry, Dalton Guidry, Donald Guidry, Roland Guidry, and Olen Maxell.

WILLIAM HAMILTON TINLIN, III

WILLIAM “Bill ” Hamilton Tinlin, III, 58, of Albuquerque, NM, died Tuesday, May 23, 2017. Funeral services were held at Riverside Funeral Home, Albuquerque, NM, Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. Survivors include his mother, Marie K. Tinlin; his wife, Sandra Tinlin; sons, Jared Daniel Tinlin and Jason Robert Tinlin; daughter, Jenny Hatcher; and son, William Hamilton Tinlin IV. He is also survived by his brother Kyle Tinlin.

Mary Eleanor Steward

Mary E. Steward, 78, of Vidor died Friday, June 2, 2017 at Altus Gardens Hospice Facility in Beaumont. A native of Beaumont, she was a longtime resident of Vidor and Beaumont. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 5, 2017 at Eastgate United Pentecostal Church with burial following at Restlawn Memorial Park in Vidor. She is survived by her husband, Fred Steward Sr. of Vidor, daughters Cindy Venter of Hamshire, Carol Steward of Vidor, Melissa Tappe of Vidor, and four grandchildren.

Class of 2017 moves to its future

Several thousand Vidorians turned out at Beaumont’s Lamar University Montagne Center on Saturday morning to watch their loved ones’ matriculate into adulthood. Parents, grandparents, relatives and friends looked on proudly as 262 members of the Vidor High School Class of 2017 marched together, for the last time, onto the floor of the Montagne arena for their high school commencement ceremony as the Vidor High School Band performed “Pomp and Circumstance”.
