Indians win streak continues with 42-14 win over Pirates

By Randall Luker

“They played better in every phase of the game. They outperformed, out played and out coached us,” Vidor Head Coach Jeff Mathews said following Vidor’s second district loss of the season, a disappointing 42-14 thrashing at the hands of the Port Neches-Groves Indians.

“They are a good team,” Mathews said, “but I think we are a better team than what we showed.”

Pirates face tough test at home against district leading Indians

 By Randall Luker The Vidorian

Way back before Harvey, or the first snap of the season even, Vidor Head Coach Jeff Mathews predicted, in no particular order, that Port Arthur Memorial and Port Neches Groves would be number one and two in District 22-5A, and as it turns out, he hit the nail on the head.

The Indians and Titans battled it out in a slugfest last Friday with the Indians eventually coming out on top 44-36 at The Reservation. With the win, Port Neches-Groves at 5-0, 4-0 is at the top of the 22-5A heap, with PAM 4-1, 4-1 in second. Vidor, at 3-1, 3-1 and Nederland, 3-2, 4-2 round out the top four. To beat the Indians, Vidor is going to have to eliminate the drive killing mental errors which cost them the Nederland game, and find a way to stop two of the district’s most potent offensive players in QB Roschon Johnson and WR Preston Riggs. Riggs has scored 69 points for the Indians and Johnson, 62.

Fast and furious fourth quarter seals Pirate victory over Raiders

By Randall Luk

After a slow start, the Vidor Pirates notched another district win with a 40-21 victory at Lumberton.

After being stopped early, the Pirates’ offense drew first blood at 5:50 in the first when Skylar Leckelt broke through the Raider defense and outdistanced his pursuers for a 64 yard touchdown run. The Quirante kick put the Pirates up 7-0.

Both teams traded punts on their next possessions. Lumberton picked up a first on a 14 yard completion and then 7 yards on a run, but a 15 yard sack killed their drive and they had to punt to the Pirates, who got the ball on the 5 yard line.

Vidor JV defeats Lumberton

By Watson Franks

This past Thursday night, the Vidor JV hosted the Lumberton Raiders and came away with another impressive victory. The final score was 40-21, but could have been even higher. The Pirates controlled both sides of the ball from the opening minutes. The Defense was team tackling and giving full coverage on every receiver. The Lumberton offense was confused throughout the game. Congrats to a great job Defense!

The Vidor offense was led by Quarterback JC Marshall. He looked good under center and made one good decision after another. The star of the game was running back Sequist. He seemed unstoppable throughout the evening with scores of 60, 58, 40 and 30.

Pirates “have a plan” to restrain Raiders

Early this week, when Vidor Head Coach Jeff Mathews was faced with the possibility of 4-5 starters not being available for Friday’s district game against the Lumberton Raiders, Mathews said the coaching staff had carefully watched game films and come up with a plan to compensate.

Lack of depth isn’t a new problem for the Pirates though. Over the last two weeks, several junior varsity players have been brought up to play on the varsity level when a number of varsity starters haven’t been able to answer the bell due to injuries.

Pirates suffer first district loss

By Randall Luker

Missed opportunities, miscues and a scrappy Nederland team that never gave up contributed to the Pirates first loss of the season at Pirate Stadium Saturday.

The early afternoon game took a toll on spectators, players and performers with the 90 degree heat and comparable humidity sending a score of students for heat related treatment in nearby ambulances or the fieldhouse.

Vidor won the toss and deferred. The Quirante kick was deep, to the 5, and Nederland ran it out to the 18, where they began their opening drive. A three yard pickup on first was followed by a 13 yard pickup by Kevon Latolus. Facing third and nine, Devon Simmons ran to the 49 and another Nederland first down.

Pirates notch second district win in 42-14 trouncing of Panthers

By Randall Luker The Vidorian

The Vidor Pirates jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back as they cruised to a 42- 14 victory over the Ozen Panthers Monday night at

The Butch. The Pirates dominated the Panthers in the lightning delayed district matchup as Vidor’s running game shredded the Ozen defense and the Pirate defense held the Panthers to just 14 second half points. Vidor received and ran off five minutes on the opening drive of 62 yards to score at 7:06 in the first quarter.

Kelby Odom was the workhorse on the drive, scoring the TD and 2 point conversion, but Coach Jeff Mathews took advantage of his talented backfield with Zach Dahlenburg, Brad Nunez, and Keaton Jones each being used in the drive.
