What great deer hunters do

While you’re sitting at home in the air conditioning, great hunters are out in the heat locating deer they plan to hunt in the fall and patterning their movements. Wh i le you’re inside watching the baseball game, they’re outside locating food, water sources, and hard-toreach areas of cover where they deer hunt.

Fish tales include triple tails, other elusive fish

The wind was light and from the north as we launched my Pathfinder 22 in the darkness. The tide was running in through the pilings of the Causeway Bridge. There was no doubt in my mind where we were going fishing with conditions like that. It was to be destination Sabine Jetty. Running down the ship channel past Sabine Pass the familiar smell of the Gulf of Mexico was in the air. Gone was the stagnant fresh water smell that we have been living with for the last five months.

Fishing and Hunting Southeast Texas By Capt. Bill Watkins

It has only been two or maybe three weeks ago that the Sabine River finally dropped down into the river channel and the water that has covered  the bottoms for most of this year began draining out. The woods were still very wet and my two  low land stands were still not accessible. There was  no way to get in there without a great effort so I waited for the mud to dry. Well, the mud dried!  The high pressure system that has set up over Texas has sucked the water out  of the ground in a dramatic way. This Wednesday  I decided that I could make it in so at dawn I set off into the woods  on my Polaris Ranger. When I turned off of the main gravel road the  first big mud hole in the road was not a mud hole  any longer.
