Hunting wood ducks in the river bottoms

By Capt. Bill Watkins

It was damp in the dark woods of the river bottom and quite warm for December. When I bailed out of my truck thirty minutes earlier the temperature gauge in my truck read 69 degrees. Now as I hurriedly followed the old logging trail sweat began to break out inside the band of my hunting cap. I had to beat the wood ducks before they came sweeping in through the timber to land in the old slough. There is a favored spot along the slough under a giant willow oak right on the bank of the slough where I have killed many wood ducks over the course of my life. That was my destination on this morning. When I got there, I shined my flashlight on the old tree and found that it was down across the slough.

Fall flounder run in full swing on Sabine Lake

By Capt. Bill Watkins

We launched the boat in the predawn darkness in a fairly stiff, cold, damp, northeast wind. It was no later than 5:00 am and there were already four empty boat trailers in the parking lot at the Louisiana Causeway boat ramp. One of them, a fellow fishing guide’s rig, had already dripped dry. “He must have launched at midnight and slept in the boat”, I thought to myself. Even through the cold wind there were still a few really tough mosquitoes buzzing around and biting us on our unprotected faces and hands. I started the big outboard engine, turned on my running lights and headed down the Sabine Ship Channel toward what is known locally as “Little Cheniere”.

The two point conversion put the Pirates up 8-7 for their only lead of the evening.

Strategic placement will only get you so far

Since I am not a bow hunter nor am I on an MLD hunting property I have to wait for rifle season to take a deer. That being said, I can take a hog if one happens by and I certainly can watch the deer come and go while looking through the rifle scope and saying to myself, “bang you’re dead”.
