Turnovers, penalties doom Pirates in opener

By Dan Luker

The Vidor Pirates opened the 2015 high school football campaign by hosting the Bay High School Tornados from Panama City, Florida. An expected capacity crowd on the home side saw the Tornadoes take a hard fought 19-7 win over a mistake prone Pirate squad. Vidor turned the ball over 5 times and were penalized three times for personal foul infractions to go along with a couple of drive killing holding penalties. Even with the mistakes, the Pirates were  in position to take the win with just over two minutes left in the  game. Unfortunately a big hit by the Tornado defense caused a turnover that led to a “scoop and score” play for Bay High that led to the final score and put the game out of reach.

Pirates open season against Panama City FL Bay High

The Vidor Pirates will kick off the 2015 high school football season against an out of state opponent, Panama City FL Bay High School. Last year Vidor travelled to Pensacola FL to take on Escambia High to open the season and fell to the Florida boys 35-6 in a game that was later forfeited to the Pirates, due to ineligible players and recruiting of players charges against the coach.

Water safety reminder: Life jackets save lives

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about ten people die from unintentional drowning every day, and of these, two will be children aged 14 or younger. These statistics show drowning is  the sixth leading cause of unintentional injury  and death for people of all ages, and the second leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14 years. Drowning is also the leading cause of fatalities each year at Big Thicket National Preserve.

Stick with what you know, but don’t be afraid to try new things

Once I find something that works for me I tend to go to seed on it. The brand and type of monofilament fishing line that I use is a case in point. For at least twenty-five years I have favored XT Trylene line over all others. Back in my early tournament days I was  still experimenting with mono lines. I tried quite a few and had various  degrees of success but once I tried XT Trylene (extra tough) I ended my search. XT is very abrasive resistant, casts well on any of the bait casting reels that I have used and is dependable. Trylene  also makes other mono lines such as XL and Big Game. Both of these are good but the XL while excellent for casting is not as abrasive resistant as XT and the Big Game was too stretchy for driving a hook through a plastic worm into the tough mouth of a black  bass. It depends upon which species of fish and the reel to be used to determine which line is best.

Lonestar 600 Mini Sprints, Econo Stocks wheel into GTRP action on Friday

Joy Graham
Golden Triangle Raceway Park is excited to announce the 2015 debut of the Lonestar 600 Mini Sprints this  Friday, August 21st. The mini sprints are powered by motorcycle engines and are small replicas of the 360 and 305 sprints. There will be three classes of these fast openwheel cars performing. The “600’s”, the Restrictors and the Jr. Sprinters.  Check out their web site www.lonestar600.org for more information.  Racing on the same program, for the first time this season, will be the Econo Stocks. A four cylinder stock class similar to the “stingers”  that use to run on the local oval. Also, in the heat of competition will  be our all time Southeast Texas fan favorites, Limited Modifieds, Street Stocks, and Jr. Mini Stocks.
