Pirates lose heartbreaker to Port Neches-Groves

By Randall Luker

The final seconds were decisive in a heartbreaking 41-40 loss to district rivals Port Neches- Groves Friday.

The Vidor Pirate varsity basketball team had already defeated the Indians twice this season in the Bridge City and Nederland tournaments, but in their first district meeting, poor shooting from the free throw line cost the Pirates.

The game see-sawed with the Indians up 10-9 after the first period, the Pirates led 18-12 after the Indians could just put up two points in the second, but in the third period, the Indians came up big, outscoring the Pirates 19-11 to regain the lead at 31-29. The Pirates settled down and outscored the Indians 11- 10 in the fourth.

Top scorers for Vidor were Elizabeth Torres with 7 points and Nicole Sanders with 6 points.

Fishing for the big three on Sabine Lake

By Capt. Bill Watkins

It has been nearly eighteen years since I began my guide service on Sabine Lake. In the beginning, I kept a log book on the days fished, the conditions of weather and water on those days and what lures that we used to catch the fish. After several years, I decided that I no longer needed the log book but rather committed everything to memory; probably more laziness on my part more than anything else. Even though memory has served me well there are times that I can’t quite remember what years were better than others for catching speckled trout, red fish, and flounder. When I first started, the fishing at Sabine was really good for all three species but as time passed there were up and down fluctuations in both numbers and size of the three species of fish.

Hunting wood ducks in the river bottoms

By Capt. Bill Watkins

It was damp in the dark woods of the river bottom and quite warm for December. When I bailed out of my truck thirty minutes earlier the temperature gauge in my truck read 69 degrees. Now as I hurriedly followed the old logging trail sweat began to break out inside the band of my hunting cap. I had to beat the wood ducks before they came sweeping in through the timber to land in the old slough. There is a favored spot along the slough under a giant willow oak right on the bank of the slough where I have killed many wood ducks over the course of my life. That was my destination on this morning. When I got there, I shined my flashlight on the old tree and found that it was down across the slough.
