Edward Aurice “Buck” Dupree

On the morning of Tuesday, November 17, 2015, Edward Aurice “Buck” Dupree passed away at his home in Huffman, Texas. Buck was 79 years old. Buck Dupree was born in Beaumont, Texas on July 18, 1936 to Ellis and Shirley Dupree. He grew up in Vidor, Texas and graduated from Vidor High School in the Class of 1953. After high school, Buck joined the United States Air Force and served four years. He and his wife Nel returned to Vidor after his tour with the USAF for the following 4 years, then moved to Pasadena, Texas for 10 years, and finally settled in Huffman, Texas in 1973. Buck was a talented musician and an avid golfer who dearly loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was so proud of his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the lights of his life, and his happiest times were when they were around him. He also took great pride in his work in the prison ministry group from Lake Houston United Methodist Church.

Jimmie L. Smith

Jimmie L. Smith, 70, of Vidor, Texas, passed away on November 20, 2015, in Orange, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm, Sunday, December 6, 2015, at First Baptist Church in Vidor. Officiating will be Reverend Terry Wright. Cremation was under the direction of Claybar Haven of Rest Crematory. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 1:00pm. Born in Eupora, Mississippi, she was the daughter of Tommie and Pauline Lawrence. Jimmie was an excellent cook and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was very involved in her church, especially the music. Jimmie was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Billy Lawrence; and sister, Bobbie Oswalt. She is survived by her husband, Lowrey A.

Ruth Powell Garlington

Ruth Powell Garlington, 89, of Jasper, TX passed away Sunday, November 22, 2015 at the Baptist Hospital in Beaumont with complications from a massive stroke. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 24 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Jasper, TX. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. also at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at Weeks Cemetery located off Hwy 255, north of Jasper. Ruth was born October 2, 1926 in Brookeland, TX. She graduated from Brookeland High School and Stephen F. Austin University with a Master’s Degree in Administration and McNeese University with a Master’s Degree in Library Science. Ruth and R. A. Garlington married June 1, 1946. During her educational career, she was employed by school districts in Devers, Mauriceville, Vidor, Buna and Newton. During this time she was the secretary to Vidor and Buna Superintendents, a classroom teacher, high school librarian, and high school supervisor.

Vernon “Bo” Strother

Vernon “Bo” Strother, 66 died Thursday, November 26th, 2015 at his home. A native of Oakdale, LA, Bo was a longtime resident of Vidor who proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Bo loved to fish and hunt but especially enjoyed spending time at the beach with his grandchildren. Visitation will be Monday, November 30, 2015 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor. Funeral service will be Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Funeral Home with interment to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park. Bo is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Thelma Strother, 5 daughters, Elizabeth Hewett of Splendora, TX, Marlesa Gould and husband Ron of Vidor, Stephanie Ardoin and husband Chad of Ville Platte, LA, Denice Jackson and husband Josh of Bronson, TX, and Chrissie Strother of Mauriceville.

Evan Robert “Bob” Hawes

Hawes, 83, of Beaumont, died Friday, November 27, 2015 at his home. He was a native of Port Arthur and a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict. He served in the Texas Public Schools for 35 years. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Vidor, Vidor. A visitation with the family will occur immediately preceding the service at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Vidor. Survivors include his wife Barbara; three children, Jena Renee Haynes, Lisa Diane Dodson, and Randall Kyle Hawes; four grandchildren; and sister, Sarah Frances Hawes. Billy S. Adcock

Billy S. Adcock, 64, of Lumberton, died Sunday, November 29, 2015. He was a native of Orange, and retired from Chevron after 38 years as a head operator of the Benzine Unit. His funeral service will be 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 4, 2015, at Broussard’s, Nederland. Per Mr. Adcock’s wishes, his cremation will follow at Broussard’s, Crematorium, Beaumont. Survivors include his wife, Karen Adcock of Lumberton; daughters, Koby Adcock of Lumberton and Kourtney Adcock of Houston; mother, Lucille Irvin and her husband, Donald, of Burkeville; brother, Randy Adcock of Vidor; sisters, Tommie Bodin of Hemphill; Jeannie Brown of Mauriceville; Gracie Warren of Homewood, MS; and Sherry Merrel of Nederland.

Curtis Drake

Curtis H. Drake, 79, of Buna died Monday, November 30, 2015 at Oakwood Manor in Vidor. A native and lifelong resident of Buna, he was a retired heavy equipment operator and a U.S. Navy Veteran. Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Adams EE Stringer Funeral Home, Buna, with burial at Antioch Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. He is survived by his wife, Alice Drake; children, Terry Drake; Connie Tarver; Pam Willcox; Serina Johnson; and Kevin Drake; brothers Raymond Drake and Travis Drake; sisters Louise Eller and Nell Garrett; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

James “Santa” Aldridge

James Santa Aldridge, 70, of Nederland, died Saturday, November 28, 2015. A native of Port Arthur and lifelong resident of the area, he was a United States Navy veteran. He retired after 32 years from the City of Nederland. Survivors include his wife, Solange Aldridge of Nederland; sons, Willie Mayo of Burleson; Gene Mayo of Nederland; Scott Aldridge of Mauriceville; and Corey Aldridge of Groves; daughter , Cortney Duplechain of Groves; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 2, 2015, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Nederland, with interment to follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, Port Neches. Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Aldridge’s memory to American Heart Association , P.O. Darwin Paul “Butch” Gambrell

Darwin Paul Butch Gambrell, 73, of Vidor died Thursday, November 26, 2015. He was an Army veteran and retired from Unocal in 1992. A private memorial will be held Saturday and graveside at a later date. He is survived by his wife, Candy Ryder Gambrell, two daughters, Charmaigne Seymour of Georgetown, Paula Maxwell of Vidor, four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, brothers James and Jarvis Gambrell and sister, Katrina Gambrell all of Houston. Sisters-in-law Stella Ryder and Sylvia Rogers of Conroe, Sherry Micelle of Lake Charles and Eyvonne Foreman of Murfreesboro, TN.
