Fire causes damage to home in N. Vidor

OCESD#1 Firefighters were able to contain the flames of a house fire to three rooms of a residence on North Main on Thursday morning, but fire damage to that end of the home was heavy. According to Orange County Emergency Services District #1 Fire Chief Bryant Champagne, fireman got a call from the homeowner at about 8:00 a.m. that her house was on fire in the 5100 block of North Main Street near Pug Road.

Sheriff warns of telephone scam

Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt says that a crook is calling county residents attempting to trick them out of their hard earned money. “I have had several citizens call me asking who this employee of mine was and why he would call them asking for money,” said Sheriff Merritt on Monday. “And I told them that he is not an employee and it is obviously a scam that is going around.”

Candles lit for lost children

Hundreds of people from all parts of Orange County gathered on the Orange County Courthouse lawn on Monday night to remember and pray for the one hundred and fifty-one Texas children who lost their lives to child abuse in 2014. The month of April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and members of C.A.S.A (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and employees of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services-Child Protective Services along with other well wishers took time on this first week of April to light candles and remember those helpless children who paid the ultimate cost for child abuse last year.

Phelan says House budgets for Southeast Texas schools

Even though they only meet for about six months every two years, the Texas Legislature has to craft a budget for the state that is to be the state’s financial framework over those two years until they meet again. The Texas Legislature is now in session and both the Texas Senate and the Texas House have been working on budget bills in their separate houses. According to Texas District 21 State Representative Dade Phelan, after a marathon eighteen hour debate over some three hundred and fiftyfour amendments submitted in Budget Bill, the Texas House passed its 2016-2017 Texas budget of $210 billion last Wednesday morning following an all night session.

New 911 street addresses, fire hydrants on council agenda

“It’s déjà vu all over again”-Yogi Berra The baseball Hall of Famer could have been referring to this week’s Vidor City Council meeting as the majority of the council’s agenda items are making a return engagement, one from last year and another from the 1980’s. Council members will consider entering into an interlocal agreement with the Orange County Emergency Services District for the purchase of fire hydrants to be installed within the city.

Prudent spending leads to additional sewer rehab

Since 2010 Vidorians have seen the results of nearly $30 million Wastewater Improvement Project  being constructed around town. The Orange County Water Control and Improvement District #1 has built a new $13 million wastewater treatment plant replacing three aging and inefficient treatment plants. They’ve laid miles of large sewer mains to gather the effluent more efficiently. And most recently they have done a major rehabilitation on miles of old, leaking wastewater collection lines in the oldest parts of Vidor.  According to OCWC&ID#1 District Manager Norman Blackman, over the course of the massive project the district has been fortunate to find cost savings when they could and the Wastewater Improvement Project has  been consistently under running cost projections.

Main Street ramp closure moves to Tuesday

The electronic marquee sign announcing the closure of the eastbound North Main Street exit ramp in I-10 was changed sometime on Wednesday to read April 7th rather than April 6th as previously announced. In Wednesday’s edition of The Vidor Vidorian it was announced that  TXDOT would close theexit ramp so that they  could do some concrete work on the roadway base of the ramp and that the work would take one full day on Monday.

Vidor students tackle STAAR tests

Although this is a short week for students of the Vidor I.S.D, what with an early dismissal on Thursday followed by the holiday to observe Good Friday, it wasn’t an easy week for a number of Vidor students. Fourth, fifth, seventh,eighth, ninth and tenth graders  were administered STAAR(State of Texas Assessments  of Academic Readiness) teststhis week in Reading, Writing and English I and II

Fire puts south Vidor couple out of their home

Although flames were limited to just two sides of one wall and the attic above, the structural damage that a fire caused in a south Vidor rendered the residence as unlivable on Wednesday. Orang e County Emergency Services District #1 Firefighters received a 9-1-1 call from a neighbor of the residence in the 1400 block of Terry Road at about 9:42 a.m. reporting smoke coming from a house across the street.

Texas Star Music Competition next week

Because of its tradition of music and homegrown talent, Vidor, Texas has earned themoniker of “Where the Music Began”. Certainly members of the Vidor Chamber of Commerce have adopted the phrasein their advertising and are very proud of our musical tradition. For that reason, the Vidor Chamber is looking for area musicians, singers, bands, combos, soloists and groups  who believe they have what ittakes to carry a tune and entertain the public.
