Summer Reading

The Vidor Public Library held Summer Reading on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Parish Hall. Guest Ellen Rondomanski with Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center read “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss. Shangri La is nestled within 252 acres in the heart of Orange.

Jefferson County Bar Association to hold free elder law seminar for area veterans

Beaumont – The Jefferson County Bar Association (JCBA) will hold a FREE Elder Law Seminar for area veterans on Friday, July 14, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. at the Beaumont VA Outpatient Clinic located at 3420 Veterans Circle, Beaumont, TX. Appointments are strongly encouraged by calling the bar office at (409)835-8647.

The seminar will begin at noon with a 30-minute Elder Law presentation. At the conclusion of the 30- minute presentation, veterans will be given an opportunity for brief advice and counsel related to elder law, i.e. wills/estate planning, guardianship, power of attorney, planning for incapacity, etc.

LIT has strong showing at SkillsUSA contest

Lamar Institute of Technology students were standouts at the SkillsUSA 2017 National Leadership and Skills Championships June 19-24 in Louisville, Kentucky LIT students put their skills up against other students throughout the U.S. Two students won medals while the other students had strong placements. The championships reward students for excellence in relevant training that employers’ seek.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, educators and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.

National Geodetic Survey Monument in honor of Michael Hoke

ORANGE – On Wednesday, June 7, 2017, a group of colleagues and friends gathered to dedicate a National Geodetic Survey monument in honor of the memory, educational commitment, and life of Michael Hoke, first Managing Director of Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center. The geodetic survey monument was donated by several of Michael Hoke’s colleagues at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Lamar University, and the JASON Project of Southeast Texas with whom he worked for many years in numerous science programs dedicated to inspiring students to broaden their understanding of science and the environment.

Nichols meets with local superintendents

Austin — This week, Sen. Robert Nichols (RJacksonville) met with school superintendents from around Senate District 3 to discuss items which will be addressed during the Special Legislative Session, beginning on July 18, 2017. In addition, they also discussed what occurred during the 85th Regular Legislative Session.

“As we head into the upcoming special session, many of the items which will be addressed are education related. I wanted to make sure I took the opportunity to discuss these important issues with the Superintendents from our local school districts,” said Senator Nichols.

Summer Camp Fun

Kids in the VISD Community Education/Vidor Rotary Club summer reading camp studied jungle and sea animals last week. They made jellyfish and monkeys. The camp is in its final week this week.

Summer Reading Program

The Vidor Public hosted Tony Two Hawks Molina with Young Audiences of Southeast Texas for the Summer Reading Program on Wednesday, June 21, 2017. Tony is an actor from the multi awardwinning film “Yakona”.

Tony Two Hawks showed the audience Native American artifacts from before and after the time when the Europeans arrived in America. Tony also entertained the children by playing two of his flutes.

Reading Camp

Kids in VISD Community Education/Vidor Rotary Club summer reading camp met Azul, a blue and yellow macaw. They also created hens after reading a story about a hen. The students spent week one studying insects, week two studying birds, and in week three are learning about animals that live in the jungle.
