Pirates prepare for 2020 in 4A class

The Vidor Pirates are facing all the usual challenges as they prepare for the 2020 football season, getting into playing shape, learning and executing plays and teamwork, but this year, new 4A opponents, plus Covid-19 restrictions are adding additional challenges for coaches and players both.

Head Coach Jeff Mathews said he, his staff, and players are dealing with mandates from a regular alphabet soup of agencies. “We are following TEA, UIL and CDC guidelines,” he said. That’s the Texas Education Agency, University Interscholastic League and the US Centers for Disease Control for those not up on government agency acronyms.

In addition to pads and helmets, protective gear now includes facemasks and social distancing, Mathews said.
