Commissioners name Lane Mooney as Orange County Sheriff

After formally accepting a letter of resignation from Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt last week on Tuesday, the Orange County Commissioners’ Court voted to name presumptive Sheriff-elect Jimmy Lane Mooney of Vidor as the latest Orange County Sheriff effective July 1 st , 2020.

It was an odd circumstance last Tuesday at the Orange County Commissioners’ Court meeting when the Court voted, not once, but twice, in two separate Commissioners’ Court agenda items, to accept the resignation letters of two Orange County elected officials. The Court first took action to accept the retirement letter of Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt who had previously announced that he would retire from his elected office six months before his term as Sheriff ends on December 31 st , 2020.

“I have been your Sheriff since January 1 st , 2009 and, without a doubt, it has been the most rewarding experience I have ever had in my life, but it comes with a price. I have tried very hard to do a good job for the citizens of Orange County and the employees of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. I hope that I have met your expectations,” said Sheriff Merritt in his letter.

When the letter was read to the half-filled courtroom, everybody in the courtroom rose to their feet to give Sheriff Merritt a standing ovation.
