Christmas Day fire takes a life

A Christmas Day house fire has taken the life of an elderly man from Little Cypress. City of Orange Fire Marshal John Bilbo reported last week that seventyyear-old Jamie Wooten of Orange died in a house fire that flared up early on Christmas morning. Marshal Bilbo said that Orange firefighters were alerted at 1:46 a.m. on December 25th, that a residence in the 6800 block of F.M. 1130, very near Little Cypress Junior High School, was on fire. The 9-1-1 caller, who was a resident of the home that was burning, told the dispatcher that there was someone still inside of the home, an elderly man.

Within four minutes of being dispatched, City of Orange firefighters quickly arrived at the burning home to find that the fire appeared to be confined to the interior of one corner of the house. Firefighters immediately attacked the flames and had the blaze under control within minutes of their arrival. The blaze had burned one room and its contents and had begun to spread to a bathroom. As some firefighters continued to work to douse hot spots and check for any other fire extension behind walls and in the attic space, others looked for the missing person.
