Don’t wait: buy flood insurance today

The Atlantic Ocean Basin Hurricane season begins June 1st, which means homeowners and renters need to buy a National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policy today to be prepared for a possible disaster in June. The reason they give to buy early is that an NFIP flood insurance policy generally takes effect 30 days after purchase.

That means if a category four hurricane were to whirl up and head for Sabine Pass sometime in June, your home wouldn’t be covered against flood damage until the thirty-first day after you paid your first premium.

That’s why it’s important to purchase flood insurance now, even if your home hasn’t been repaired yet. FEMA reminds house owners that standard homeowners’ and renters’ insurance policies do not typically cover flood damage.
