Pirates tops Nederland 4-3 in varsity soccer

By Randall Luker

It was an amazing finish to a hard fought game as the varsity soccer Pirates topped the Nederland Bulldogs 4-3 in a comeback win made even more spectacular as the Pirates were playing one man short after a player was shown his second yellow card and ejected. The winning goal, a textbook long distance kick by Garrett Healy, came with 4:16 remaining and sailed over the defenders’ heads, dropping at just the right moment to find the corner of the goal just out of the reach of Nederland goalie’s outstretched arms.

Tied 2-2 at the half, the Pirates fell behind 3-2 early in the second half but battled back, scoring twice in the final 15 minutes of the second half, once on a penalty kick, and again on Healy’s effort. Both goals came after a Pirate player was shown his second yellow card and ejected, giving Nederland a one player advantage.
