Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt is warning citizens of Orange County that there is an active telephone scam afoot in our county where the scammers are posing as Orange County Sheriff’s Office Deputies. Sheriff Merritt is issuing this alert to help prevent citizens of Orange County from becoming victims of this apparent scam that seems to have started on Monday of this week.

According to a Sheriff’s Office news release, “Sheriff Keith Merritt said several citizens have called in the past hour (7:39 p.m. on Monday, January 22, 2018) reporting they received a call from someone stating they were a deputy with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and were asked to send money to prevent being arrested for failing to appear for jury duty. (The Sheriff said) the caller is asking for a credit card number or for prepaid money cards to be purchased and those card numbers be given to the caller.”
