Pirates hope to pluck Ganders for Homecoming

By Randall Luker

It’s a playoff game. We have to win.” That’s how Vidor Head Coach Jeff Mathews described this Friday’s Homecoming game versus the Baytown Lee Ganders. Even though it’s a regular season game, the Pirates must win to preserve their playoff berth against Crosby. Of course, several other teams must either win, or lose, to knock the Pirates out, and Vidor could conceivably fail to continue on to post season play with losses to Lee and Port Arthur Memorial. A win against both would knock Nederland out of the playoff hunt and pave the way for a Central appearance.

Vidor is coming into its own late in the season and Mathews says he continues to see improvement weekly. Last week against Livingston, the rarely employed passing game was perfect, with QB William Fawcett taking to the air four times for four completions, although one was called back on a penalty. Vidor, 4-2,4-2, scored 58 points against Livingston, and is averaging close to 40 points per game while giving up an average of 23 points. Vidor gained almost 500 yards against Livingston, including 90 through the air while the Vidor defense held the Lions to -41 yards rushing and 197 through the air, almost half of that on one play.
