Excitement abounds as Pirate football plans for playoff return

“I’m real excited,” Coach Jeff Mathews said about the 2017 Vidor Pirates’ football prospects. Even after losing much of his offensive line and running backs to graduation, Mathews says the Pirates should make the playoffs again.


Port Arthur Memorial and Port Neches-Groves will likely nail down the first two spots in district, and in no particular order, Mathews opined, with the next seven teams in a dogfight for the two remaining playoff positions.


“We are looking for the kids that make the effort. If they don’t care to make the effort, they will be out of there and we’ll be looking for someone who does. Last year after the barbers Hill game we made wholesale changes. This year we are hoping we don’t have to.”
