Vidor Elementary’s Kurtis Moffitt named VISD Employee of the Month

By Sally Andrews

Second-year teacher Kurtis Moffitt was recognized as the Vidor ISD Employee of the Month by the Board of Trustees and Superintendent Dr. Jay Killgo on Monday evening at the board’s regularly scheduled meeting. Moffitt, a third grade teacher at Vidor Elementary, not only teaches math, but is constantly looking for ways to make learning fun for his students while maintaining the integrity of required STAAR rigor. He recently secured portable electronic devices from Donorchoose.org to help his students go farther and faster. He not only seeks to help his students progress academically, but socially. He recently started a boys club called Moffitt’s Mateys, which meets on Friday. It’s comprised of third grade boys that are learning about respect, integrity, honestly, and ethics. He got ties for each boy, and they are learning to tie them so they can wear them to school on Fridays. He is also a Pirate Pal, mentoring a fourth grade student in reading. “Kurtis is relatively new to education,” says Vidor Elementary administration. “But he is a quick study in the field, and has a passion for students who struggle with behavior issues. He provides a fire for education that reminds us all why we got in the business to start with.” Moffitt also dresses in character every chance he gets, with his favorite being Batman.
