ESD Commissioners asked to support 9-1-1 address change

by George Garza
The Board of Commissioners of Orange County Emergency Services District was addressed by Pete De La Cruz, Director, of the 9-1-1 Emergency Network of the Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission during their meeting last week. De La Cruz addressed the ESD Board about the proposed address changes for homes, businesses, churches and other buildings and properties located along Interstate 10 in Vidor. Although Cruz told the Board that his purpose in addressing the Board was strictly to impart information to the Commissioners, he did also ask that the Fire District Board to support the proposed standardization of the I-10 street name and property numbering system De La Cruz explained that the 911 Emergency network of Southeast Texas has been assigned the task of providing physical addressing for residences and businesses located in unincorporated areas of Hardin, Jefferson and Orange Counties. For years, in the three counties of the region, addresses have been assigned by local post offices using the rural carrier route and box number system. That system did not have designated street names and standardized residence numbering that is necessary to make the 9-1-1 system work.
