Authoritarian regimes flex censorship muscles

These past few weeks have been a troubling time for freedom of expression, with tyrannical regimes managing to put points on the board largely through the timidity of free societies. That was the dynamic we saw at work last week, when Sony Picturesdecided to cancel the release of its film “The Interview” after threats from hackers allegedly associated with North Korea. Now a similar dynamic is playing out in Russia, and Facebook is the party suffering from a deficiency of backbone.
